Peugeot 306 GTi-6 / Rallye / XU10J4RS 195 bhp Stage Two tuning package launched by Pug1off

The ultimate bolt-on tuning upgrade has arrived for Peugeot 306 GTi-6’s, Rallye’s or 205 GTi’s running an XU10J4RS engine transplant.

Careful development and dyno testing by the Brackley based marque specialist Pug1off has resulted in an engine upgrade package that combines well proven components to significantly increase the all round performance of the 167 bhp 2.0-litre, 16-valve, DOHC XU10J4RS engine.

In detail, the Pug1off Stage Two package includes; –

  • Pug1off / Cat Cams 4903106 high lift / short duration cam profiles
  • Pug1off 4-2-1 tubular exhaust manifold
  • Pug1off modified throttle body to optimise gasflow
  • Pug1off bespoke ECU remap to optimise ignition, fuelling and idle

The Cat Cams 4903106 profiles incorporate the Belgian firm’s design philosophy of high lift / short duration camshafts which promote better cylinder filling at lower engine speeds. Combined with the tuned length, 4-2-1 configuration and flow advantages of the tubular performance exhaust manifold, the Pug1off Stage Two tuning package optimises both the torque and top end power output of the XU10J4RS engine.

Extensively tested on nearby Northampton Motorsport’s advanced chassis dynomometer, the Pug1off XU10J4RS Stage Two package produces a consistent 195 bhp @ 7400 rpm, allied to 155 lb.ft of torque @ 6250 rpm. Strong mid-range torque and excellent driveability are hallmarks of the Pug1off Stage Two conversion, with over 140 lb.ft available from 4750-7250 rpm and over 150 bhp from 5500 rpm all the way up to the 7800 rpm limiter.

On the road this translates into flexible, exciting performance, allowing 306’s and converted 205 GTi to keep pace with much younger machinery. Idle from cold starts is steady and the vehicle remains MOT emissions friendly.

The Pug1off Stage Two tuning package for the XU10J4RS engine represents great value, because it’s a much lower priced alternative compared to independent throttle body conversions that require a motorsport style ‘stand-alone’ ECU. It also retains the original underbonnet appearance and is consequently lighter on insurance premiums too.

PUG1OFF BRINGS THE ICONIC PEUGEOT 205 GTi INTO THE 21st CENTURY WITH ITS ‘195’ CONVERSIONS

Produced from 1984 to 1993, the Peugeot 205 GTi is rightly regarded as the definitive hot hatch from its era. Fast forward to 2012 and thanks to effective corrosion proofing from the factory and robust mechanicals, the 205 GTi is still a popular sight on the UK’s roads – and racing circuits – where it continues to be a trackday favourite.

However, with a maximum of 130 bhp on tap from its 8-valve, 1905cc XU9 engine the 205 GTi can struggle to keep up with the performance demands of 21st century motoring, particularly for the discerning enthusiast.

Advances in suspension and braking technology open up similar scope for dynamic improvement on the 205 GTi, enabling it to potentially punch above its weight and beyond its years.

However, the challenge is to achieve a wholesale performance upgrade without undermining the cohesive, involving nature of the 205 GTi’s driving experience. Answering this challenge requires comprehensive expertise on the 205 GTi and the Peugeot range in general, which is where Pug1off comes in.

THE PUG1OFF XU10J4RS ENGINE CONVERSION:
In this spirit Brackley based marque specialists Pug1off embarked on a comprehensive update program for customer 205 GTi’s, based around using a number of key components sourced from later Peugeot models. The core of the Pug1off conversion is an engine transplant using the free revving and reliable 1998cc, DOHC, 16-valve XU10J4RS powerplant from the 306 GTi-6 / Rallye.

Aside from a slight amount of clearance relief on the 205 GTi’s slam panel this powerplant is a straight swap into the 205 GTi’s engine bay and onto the car’s original 5-speed BE3 transmission. And with 167 bhp available in car weighing just 895 kilos, this delivers sparkling performance, producing a car with a power to weight ratio of 186 bhp / ton.

Supplied and installed with a new clutch, cambelt and water pump, Pug1off charges £2220.00 for the XU10J4RS engine transplant on a drive in / drive out basis into customer supplied 205 GTi’s, including 12 month / 10,000 road mile warranty.

However, because each Peugeot 205 GTi is an individual, Pug1off offers a number of optional extras to upgrade performance yet further:-

The 1991 Pug1off 205 GTi ‘195’ test car belongs to Pug1off’s Mark Davies and features all the listed optional extras (less the billet steel flywheel.)

Pug1Off launches ‘Ultimate’ road / trackday suspension bush kit for Peugeot 106 GTI / S1 & S2 Rallye and Citroen Saxo VTR / VTS

There is little point in fitting high performance suspension to a Peugeot 106 GTi or Saxo VTS if you’re still running the original factory rubber bushes. Why? Well they could be up to 12 years old, which means that chances are they’ll have cracked and hardened over time.

Running the original suspension bushes is not a problem for an everyday road car doing the shopping run, but if you add sticky tyres and trackday use into the mix that’s when problems start occurring. From behind the wheel drivers will start to feel the steering wander under heavy braking as the car twitches from understeer to oversteer, which does little to inspire confidence in their car.

This is because the old Citroen / Peugeot factory bushes will have degraded enough to allowing the front wishbones to move around, causing unwanted ‘toe’ movement during hard acceleration and deceleration. At the rear, worn subframe bushes will cause the rear wheels to alter geometry during hard cornering, leading to unwanted oversteer and inconsistent handling.

But leading Citroen / Peugeot specialist Pug1off is delighted to announce a cure for these handling woes in the form of a new ‘Ultimate’ fast road / trackday performance suspension bush kit. Designed specifically for the Saxo VTR / VTS and Peugeot 106 GTi / Rallye (S1 & S2,) Pug1off’s ‘Ultimate’ bush kit features a combination of Polybush and Vibratechnics bushes that have been developed to offer the optimal balance between suspension location and ride comfort. The kit’s contents consist of:-

  • Polybush front wishbone bushes (front)
  • Vibratechnics front wishbone bushes (rear)
  • Polybush front anti-roll bar mountings
  • Baker BM solid rear subframe mountings (12mm)

The Polybush / Vibratechnics combination produces two distinct advantages over the original rubber bushes. Primarily, there’s a greater contact surface area across the bore of the bush, resulting in a longer lasting bush that cannot be pushed out from the housing.  Secondly, the Polybush and Vibratechnic’s steel centre rings decrease the diameter of the ‘eye’ of the bush, leaving less material to deflect under load.

Also, the Polybush and Vibratechnics front suspension bushes are produced from a material that’s considerable harder than the Citroen / Peugeot originals, meaning they deflect very little under load, reducing unwanted suspension movement to a minimum.
Crucially at the rear of the car the Baker BM solid rear subframe mounts rigidly connect the rear axle to the rest of the car, resulting in more positive, confidence inspiring cornering, improved control and driver feedback.

Pug1off Super Strong MA 5 ‘turbo’ gearkit for high power 106’s, Saxos and C2’s

Leading Peugeot specialist Pug1off is pleased to announce that it has launched a super strong ‘turbo’ gearkit designed for 106 GTi’s, Saxo VTS’s and C2’s etc running high power turbo motors, which solves the problem of the weak Citröen / Peugeot MA gearbox.

The stock Citröen / Peugeot MA gearbox was designed originally for a normally aspirated motor producing 107 lb.ft of torque, so it’s no surprise that the final drive and intermediate gears are too fragile to cope with over 200 lb.ft of torque, a figure readily achieved from even Pug1off’s low-boost turbocharged 1.6-litre, 16-valve TU5J4 engines.

Indeed, Pug1off’s high boost turbo Peugeot 106 GTi’s and Citröen Saxo VTS’s now achieve over 300 lb.ft of torque, at which point a transmission upgrade is vital otherwise the standard MA gearbox will fail.

Hence why Pug1off has developed this super strong ‘turbo’ MA gearkit which includes a bespoke heavy duty 3.26 final drive – which is CNC machined using motorsport grade steel and heat treatment techniques – as well as high strength close-ratio Quaife gears and a Tran-X multi set up plate style limited slip differential.

Key technical features of the Pug1off super strong ‘turbo’ MA 5 gearkit:-
